Steeped in history, culture, and religious traditions, Spain is filled with amazing historical monuments which provide a glimpse into the country's glorious past. The Royal Palace, Madrid: This 17th-century opulent royal dwelling built on the site of an ancient 9th century fortress, with more than 2000 rooms is a must-see while you're in Madrid. Though the Spanish royal family does not really live here anymore, it is still the venue for ceremonies and official events. Only 50 of the rooms are open to the public. Visitors can take the guided tour offered. The magnificent throne-room, lavish interiors and monumental staircases are worth a visit, as are the notable collections of art, sculpture and royal armory. The exteriors are equally imposing, with beautiful landscaped gardens and parks.

The Alhambra, Granada: This legendary Moorish stronghold located picturesquely on the Sierra Nevada range overlooking the gorgeous city of Granada has been the stuff of legends of romance and heroism. The Alhambra castle is remarkable for its intricate artwork and amazing carvings, mosaic and inlay-works. This is one monument that will leave you speechless!

Sagrada Familia, Barcelona: This 19th century cathedral is the work of the famous architect Antoni Gaudi and is still a work in progress. It has magnificent towers, art works and sculptures. As part of the tourist attractions of Barcelona, it makes for a good break from the hectic life here.

Alcazar, Seville: This palace is one of the most ancient royal residences in Spain. With its distinct Moorish influences and wonderfully laid-out gardens and parks, this palace has been used by Hollywood directors in many movies. One notable feature is the chapel where Christopher Columbus prayed and met the Spanish rulers before setting out on his voyage of discovery.

Cordoba, The Great Mosque: This is one of the most beautiful mosques in the Moorish tradition in Spain. Currently a Catholic shrine, this mosque has a lovely courtyard that once had trees, water-bodies and rainwater tanks. The magnificent columns of semi-precious stones like jasper and onyx, granite and marble are unique and unforgettable.

Roman Theater, Sagunto: Constructed in the first century AD, this monument is a witness to Spain's Roman era. The arena which can seat upto nearly 10, 000 people, is still in use for rock concerts, outdoor events and public functions.

Camino del Santiago: This ancient cathedral in northern Spain is a living memorial to the growth of Spanish Catholicism. Located on the pilgrim route, the cathedral's imposing Baroque facade, its Roman, Gothic and Neoclassical interiors are the focus of many a religious event and function even today.
