There are those of us who travel to Spain for business reasons. In most parts of Spain, it used to be a custom to take a siesta after the lunch break; lunch has always been an important meal in Spain. You may find that many people actually close their businesses so as to go for lunch. In some places, people still take a nap after lunch but in major towns and cities, this is no longer the case as people usually reopen businesses after lunch. The bigger stores however never close for lunch and remain open for most of the day. Lunch may take two to three hours.

In many places, the afternoon siesta is a great thing and it is usually natural for people to take a snooze by the TV even on a workday. Some Spaniards may work up to 7 to 8 pm.

The siesta session was actually as a result of the climate. Many people took this time to preserve energy because temperatures are really high during the afternoon periods. It was more appropriate to get back to work after the temperatures started falling. The reason why the urban areas are not vey keen on siestas is the fact that there are ways to air condition spaces, thus reducing the temperatures to a great extent.

In the past, some businesses would close in July and August. In the present day however, most businesses remain open but run on a schedule. This means that there are shorter operation periods, sometimes only up to 3 pm.

As for the banks, they are open from eight thirty or sometimes nine and remain open till two to two thirty. Between October and May, the major banks open on Saturdays at the normal times while savings ones open on Thursdays at around 4:30 to 8.00. For currency exchanges city centers, train stations as well as airports remain open for longer hours. It is easy to cash traveler’s cheques at departmental stores up to 9.00. Most government offices stay open from nine to two.
